How to Celebrate National Margarita Day

#NationalMargaritaDay is finally here!

It’s that one glorious day each year where every legal adult in the USA can—if they so choose—imbibe in the classic tequila-based Mexican drink with lessened judgment from others. “Deb, you’re drinking a margarita at your desk with lunch?” “What… it’s National Margarita Day. It’s okay!” “Well shit, girl, pour me one!”

Ways to Celebrate

It doesn’t take reading a nearly 1,000-word blog to figure out that the best way to celebrate National Margarita Day is to drink a margarita. The “whens”, “wheres”, “who withs”, and “hows” of drinking the margarita, though, are a little trickier!

  • Drink a margarita only if it will not impair your ability to work, drive, parent, or perform other essential tasks. Drinking a margarita at lunch at the office is fine if you feel like you can get back to your desk and be productive afterwards, for instance.
  • The optimal time for consuming a margarita is with your dinner. This could be a good opportunity to try that new strip mall Tex-Mex place you’ve had your eye on! But just remember, a lot of other people are going to have the same idea.
  • Likewise, many bars and restaurants offer a “happy hour” featuring reduced-price drinks during an allotted timeframe. Call ahead to find out whether or not your neighborhood bar has specials on margaritas.
  • Ordering a margarita in a restaurant may be more fun and less work, but ounce for ounce, it will cost more than purchasing the liquor at a store and making drinks at home. A restaurant-bought margarita could cost $8-$12, whereas a whole liter of mid-range tequila may only cost $17-$20, and that could make a dozen margaritas or more. Not only that, but you don’t have to worry about who will drive you home if things get out of control!
  • If consuming alcohol isn’t your thing but you still want to be a part of the National Margarita Day festivities, consider drinking the margarita mix on ice, or even limeade. You could also choose to misinterpret the meaning of the day and enjoy a margherita pizza!
  • Consider watching a movie where a character drinks margaritas, such as Kill Bill 2 or Three Amigos. Even an early episode of Breaking Bad features Hank Schrader mixing what Skyler describes as a “mean margarita”.
  • You could also get really creative and paint a picture of a margarita, record a video of how to make good margaritas, or go out and purchase new margarita glassware.
  • One day a year not enough? You could simply choose to celebrate National Margarita Day throughout the year and drink margaritas whenever you dang well feel like it!

My Hot Take

I drink enough tequila where I don’t feel the need to make a specific point to consume margaritas on a made-up national day. Now, take an item like a bagel. I love bagels, but I rarely eat them. However, if there was a national bagel day (and I’d be shocked if there isn’t) then I would be more inclined to participate. But that’s not to take anything away from the margarita. Even a really crappy one is still pretty good. I’d like to give a shout-out to Jardin Corona in northern Austin, Texas, makers of my all-time favorite marg—a frozen margarita with Blue Curacao mixed in. It’s sweet, but it will mess you up if you aren’t careful.
